Worth knowing first: Articleship begins only after clearing both groups of CA Intermediate, and it runs alongside CA Final preparation for the full 2-year period. This is where CA students genuinely do have to balance full-time work and exam preparation at the same time, a challenge CA Intermediate does not involve.
Why This Stage Is Different
CA Foundation and CA Intermediate are full-time study stages. Articleship changes that completely. You are now working real hours at a CA firm, often 8 to 9 hours a day or more during busy season, while CA Final's 6 papers still need serious preparation. The two do not pause for each other.
This is the actual balancing act CA students face, not during Intermediate, but here, once articleship and Final preparation run side by side.
Build the Habit Early, Not When It Feels Necessary
The most common mistake is waiting for a quieter period to "properly start" Final preparation. Articleship rarely gets quieter on its own, and busy season can arrive with little warning depending on the firm and the time of year. Students who build even a modest daily study habit from the first few months of articleship are in a much stronger position a year later than those who kept waiting for the right moment.
A realistic early habit is 2 to 3 hours a day, most days, even if that feels small compared to the hours you had during Intermediate. Consistency across months matters more than any single intense week.
Use Study Leave Deliberately
ICAI grants articled students a fixed number of study leave days specifically for exam preparation, separate from regular leave. This is limited, so it needs to be planned, not used reactively. Map out your target exam date, work backwards to when you will need concentrated preparation time, and request that leave from your firm well in advance, particularly if it falls near your firm's busy season.
Match Your Study Load to Your Work Load
Firm work is not evenly paced. Some months are lighter, some are intense. A study plan that assumes the same number of hours every week will break down the first time a heavy assignment comes in. Build a plan with a baseline (what you can manage on a demanding week) and a stretch target (what you do when work is lighter), rather than a single fixed number.
On heavy work weeks, protect a smaller, non-negotiable block, even 90 minutes, rather than skipping study entirely. Skipped weeks are what actually derail preparation, not lighter weeks.
Make the Practical Exposure Count
One real advantage of preparing for Final during articleship is that some subjects become more concrete through the work itself. Direct exposure to audits, tax filings, or financial statements can make certain Final topics click faster than they would from reading alone. This is a genuine benefit of the current sequencing, even though it does not replace structured study.
Protect Enough Time Before the Exam
Whatever your routine through the year, the final 6 to 8 weeks before the exam need to be genuinely focused, mock exams, past papers, and revision under timed conditions. This is where study leave matters most. Plan for it rather than hoping enough time will be available when the date gets close.
If You Cleared Foundation and Intermediate With Us
Superrad Academy does not run CA Final coaching, our focus is CA Foundation and Intermediate. But the discipline of chapter tests, mock exams, and consistent daily study we build during those stages is exactly what carries a student through articleship and Final. If you are still preparing for Foundation or Intermediate and want that foundation built properly, get in touch or call 99168 45250.
