The Full CA Qualification Explained: Foundation to Final, Step by Step

The path in brief: CA Foundation → CA Intermediate (2 groups) → Articleship (2 years, starting after completing Intermediate) → CA Final (2 groups) → ICAI Membership. Each stage has its own registration, exams, and requirements. This post explains all of them, in order.

Stage 1: CA Foundation

CA Foundation is the entry-level exam for the CA qualification. Students who have completed Class 10 can register for Foundation, but they can only appear in the exam after passing Class 12 (or equivalent). The registration fee is Rs. 9,000 (as per the current ICAI New Scheme Prospectus).

Foundation has four papers, 100 marks each (400 total):

  • Paper 1: Accounting (subjective)
  • Paper 2: Business Laws (subjective)
  • Paper 3: Quantitative Aptitude (objective, with negative marking)
  • Paper 4: Business Economics (objective, with negative marking)

To pass: minimum 40 marks in each paper, and 200 in aggregate. Exams are held in January, May, and September. Students who score 60 or more in a paper but do not pass the exam as a whole receive an exemption for that paper for the next three attempts.

There is also a Direct Entry route for graduates with a specified percentage, which allows skipping Foundation and registering directly for Intermediate. See the FAQ above for details.

Stage 2: CA Intermediate

CA Intermediate registration opens after clearing Foundation (or via Direct Entry). The registration fee is Rs. 18,000. ICAI provides study material after registration.

Intermediate has 6 papers across two groups:

Group 1

  • Paper 1: Advanced Accounting
  • Paper 2: Corporate and Other Laws
  • Paper 3: Taxation (Income Tax + GST, 50 marks each)

Group 2

  • Paper 4: Cost and Management Accounting
  • Paper 5: Auditing and Ethics
  • Paper 6: Financial Management and Strategic Management (FM + SM, 50 marks each)

Students can attempt both groups in the same exam window, or one group at a time. To pass a group: minimum 40 marks in each paper, and 50% aggregate across the three papers of that group (i.e., 150 out of 300 per group). Both groups must be cleared to complete Intermediate.

The same exemption rule applies: 60 or more in a paper carries an exemption for three subsequent attempts if the group is not cleared. For help deciding which group to attempt first: CA Intermediate Group 1 vs Group 2: Which to Attempt First?

ICITSS: Required Before Articleship

Before joining articleship, students must complete ICITSS (the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills). This is a mandatory training module covering IT applications and communication skills, organized by ICAI at authorised training centres. It must be completed before registering for articleship (not necessarily before the Intermediate exam).

Stage 3: Articleship (2 Years of Practical Training)

Articleship is the practical training component of the CA qualification. It is mandatory: you cannot qualify as a CA without completing it. Under the ICAI New Scheme, articleship is 2 years (reduced from 3 years under the Old Scheme). Students begin articleship after clearing both groups of CA Intermediate.

Articleship is with a registered CA firm. The student (called an article) works under the supervision of the principal CA, gaining hands-on experience in audit, taxation, accounting, and advisory work. ICAI sets minimum monthly stipend guidelines, which increase over the training period.

During articleship, students also prepare for and attempt CA Final, studying in evenings, weekends, and using ICAI-permitted study leave before exam dates. The exam preparation and practical training run in parallel throughout the 2 years.

Advanced ICITSS: Required Before CA Final

Before appearing in CA Final, students must also complete the Advanced ICITSS, covering advanced IT and management communication skills. This must be done before the Final exam attempt, not after clearing Intermediate.

Stage 4: CA Final

CA Final is the last examination stage of the qualification. Under the New Scheme, it has 6 papers across two groups:

Group 1

  • Paper 1: Financial Reporting
  • Paper 2: Advanced Financial Management
  • Paper 3: Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics

Group 2

  • Paper 4: Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation
  • Paper 5: Indirect Tax Laws
  • Paper 6: Integrated Business Solutions (Case Study, open book)

The passing standard is the same: 40 minimum per paper, 50% aggregate per group. CA Final exams are held in the same January, May, and September windows as Foundation and Intermediate. Students can attempt Final only after completing their 2-year articleship.

After Clearing CA Final: ICAI Membership

Once a student has cleared both groups of CA Final and completed their 2-year articleship, they become eligible for Associate Membership of ICAI. On admission to membership, they are entitled to use the designation "Chartered Accountant" and the initials "ACA" (Associate Chartered Accountant). After 5 years of membership (and meeting other conditions), they become eligible for Fellowship (FCA).

The Member of ICAI designation opens doors across practice, industry, financial services, government, and international accounting. CA is one of the most widely recognised professional qualifications in India.

Frequently asked questions

The full CA journey from Class 12 typically takes 4 to 5 years, though this varies based on how many attempts are needed at each level. A student who clears Foundation in 1 attempt, Intermediate in 2 to 3 attempts (across 2 groups), completes 2 years of articleship, and clears CA Final in 2 to 3 attempts would complete the qualification in 5 to 6 years from Class 12. Students who clear multiple levels on their first attempt can finish in 4 to 4.5 years. There is no upper limit on the number of attempts.

Yes. Commerce graduates and postgraduates with 55% marks, or other graduates/postgraduates with 60% marks, can register directly for CA Intermediate without appearing in CA Foundation. This is called the Direct Entry route. These students must complete a 4-week Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS) before joining articleship, and an Advanced ICITSS before the Final exam. Check ICAI guidelines at icai.org for current Direct Entry criteria.

ICITSS (Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) is a mandatory training module for CA students. It must be completed before registering for articleship. It covers basic IT applications and communication and presentation skills. The Advanced ICITSS is a similar module required before appearing in CA Final, covering advanced IT skills and management and communication skills. Both are organized by ICAI and conducted at authorised training centres.

After clearing CA Final and completing 2 years of articleship, the student becomes an Associate Member of the ICAI (ACA) and is entitled to use the designation "Chartered Accountant." They can then practise independently as a CA, join a CA firm, or work in the industry in finance, audit, taxation, or advisory roles. CA is also one of the qualifications accepted for direct registration as a Cost Accountant (CMA) and has reciprocal arrangements with accounting bodies in certain other countries.

Yes. ICAI implemented a New Scheme of Education and Training effective from 2023. Key changes under the New Scheme include: CA Final now has 6 papers instead of 8; some papers were merged or restructured; the articleship period was reduced from 3 years to 2 years; the overall structure was streamlined. Students who registered under the Old Scheme were given transition timelines. All new registrations from 2023 onwards are under the New Scheme. Always verify current rules at icai.org as ICAI updates guidelines periodically.
